Appledore

Appledore is a picturesque village on the bank of the river Torridge around 6 miles from Barnstaple. It has quaint narrow streets and colour washed cottages that lead to the quay which is the focal point of the village. Appledore can be traced back to Saxon times and it has always been associated with a strong maritime tradition. During Tudor times it was associated with importing tobacco from the new world. Later you can imagine it had its fair share of smugglers. It has a small shipbuilding yard, and is also the home the North Devon Maritime museum.
