Okehampton Castle

Okehampton Castle is located on the outskirts of Okehampton on the North West of Dartmoor. It is a medieval motte and bailey castle that was built by Baldwin FitzGilbert after the Norman invasion to help consolidate Norman rule in Devon. The castle was later owned by the de Courtenay family who were involved in the War of the Roses. After Henry Courtenay was executed by Henry VIII in the 16th Century, Okehamton Castle was abandoned and fell into ruin during the following centuries.
