Shute Barton, historically known as Old Shute House is the remnants of a medieval Manor house located near Colyton and Axminster in East Devon. It was first built in 1380 by Sir William II Bonville (d.1407), Sheriff of Somerset, Dorset and Devon. The building has had a number of changes since that time, but the Great Hall is from the original structure. The house has changed hands over the centuries. Notable owners include Cicely Bonville who adapted the house into a Tudor residence. During the reign of Henry VIII it was owned by Lady Jane Grey, executed wife of Henry and the estate was given to the crown and later Queen Mary gave it to Sir William Petre. It is managed by the National Trust.
