Lifton

Lifton is a small village in West Devon. It is referred to as Liwtune in King Alfred's will of 880 and its strategic significance in those days cannot be underestimated as the hostile border with Cornwall - a seperate country was only a mile away.

The village church possibly dates back to the 14th Century, but most of it was modernised in the 19th Century, so it is difficult to see some of the original features apart from the possibly 12th Century font.

Other interesting buildings include the Lifton Hall Hotel which dates from the 16th Century.

The scenery in the Tamar valley is often overlooked by visitors on their way to Dartmoor, North Devon or Cornwall, but Lifton is located in a beautiful area that should be appreciated.
