Moretonhampstead is a small market town on the eastern slopes of Dartmoor. The land between the Teign and Bovey Rivers was named Mor Tun by the saxons. It was referred to as Moreton in the Domesday book and even at that time, sheep were an important part of its economy. During the later centuries until the decline of the wool industry, Moretonhampstead (The hampstead came from a later Lord of the manor) became a successful market town and a good stopping point on the roads accross Dartmoor. Sadly a lot of the old buildings were destroyed in fires in the 19th Century, but there still remains a few buildings that link it to its Saxon and Norman heritage. One of which is St Andrew's church which dates from the 15th Century and the granite Almshouses are also worth seeing. Today Moretonhampstead is an ideal base to explore and enjoy the many activities that Dartmoor has to offer and the town has a number of B&Bs to cater for them. |
