Awarded an AA Rosette for its dazzling Devon dishes, Sampsons has put Newton Abbot firmly on the gastro-map. The restaurant is part of a beautiful medieval thatched farmhouse, with the surrounding buildings converted into pretty hotel rooms. The family owners have a strong “buy local” policy, so you can savour the delights of fish straight from Brixham and eggs laid by Sampsons’ own hens. The blackboard menu, which changes daily, is great value: the day’s choices might include mussels in lemon butter, homemade lamb and apricot pie and Belgian chocolate in a brandy snap basket. In the evening, the restaurant wows its loyal clientele with the likes of goat’s cheese filo parcel followed by pan-fried sea bass on a pea ragout and lemon balm crème brulee. This is fresh, original food, well-rounded and brilliantly executed. That Rosette is well deserved.
